How should handmade and heirloom textiles be stored?
Prepare a clean, dry, flat surface; wash and dry your hands; remove jewellery that can catch; and support the textile's full weight when moving it. Store it away from light, damp, dust, pests, and rapid environmental change. Use conservation-quality supports only when they suit the fibre and climate. Do not wash, iron, repair, or treat stains before the materials, condition, and cultural care requirements are understood.
Fragile, valuable, mould-affected, pest-affected, or culturally sensitive pieces need advice from an appropriate textile conservator and, where relevant, knowledgeable community custodians or makers.
Record the textile before moving it
Photograph the overall object and any labels, inscriptions, damage, old repairs, stains, or loose elements. Record what is known about the maker, date, materials, use, and previous storage.
Ask whether the piece has a culturally defined orientation, fold, access rule, or handling protocol. Generic archival advice should not override knowledge held by the maker or originating community.
Prepare the handling space first
The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute says to plan the move before touching an antique textile, prepare the equipment, and have the appropriate number of people ready. It recommends clean hands washed with soap and water, sleeves rolled up, and jewellery or loose items removed.
Use a clean, flat surface covered with an appropriate clean barrier. Keep food, drinks, pens, and felt-tip markers away. Move notes and tools to a separate surface so they cannot roll, leak, or catch the cloth.
Support the weight instead of pulling an edge
Do not lift a textile by a corner, fringe, sleeve, strap, or decorative element. Slide a clean rigid support beneath a flat piece where practical, or support the whole item with clean hands and enough helpers. Avoid sharp folds and do not stack objects on top while examining it.
If the textile is stiff, brittle, fragmenting, heavily embellished, or attached to another material, stop before bending or rolling it. A textile conservator can assess how its weight and weak areas should be supported.
Choose storage around condition and climate
Avoid storage with light, visible damp, condensation, active leaks, strong heat, or rapid changes. The Smithsonian's climate and textile storage guidance emphasizes that geographic hazards affect the method; a material that helps in one climate can create a damaging microclimate in another.
Flat storage can support a textile evenly when there is enough space and the piece can be moved on its support. Minimize folds. If a sound textile must be folded, broad padded curves reduce sharp creases, but the support material must suit the fibres, dyes, finishes, and local climate.
Rolling may suit some large, structurally sound, flat textiles. It is not a default for brittle, stiff, composite, lined, shaped, or heavily decorated pieces. The tube, interleaving, direction, and outer cover all need conservation review.
Acid-free tissue is not one universal product
The Smithsonian explains that many ordinary papers and boards become acidic and brittle and can transfer acidity to adjacent objects. Its tissue-paper guidance says buffered alkaline tissue can be acceptable for cotton or linen but potentially harmful to silk or wool. It suggests neutral-pH, unbuffered acid-free tissue for general mixed textile storage.
That guidance warns that paper and board can be inappropriate in some subtropical conditions. Choose storage material only after identifying the textile and considering the environment.
Do not clean a problem into a larger one
Do not assume an old stain should be removed. Water, detergent, solvents, steam, heat, suction, pressure, and adhesive repair can move dyes, distort yarns, remove finishes, set stains, or damage weak fibres. A method that works on a modern washable item may be unsuitable for an old or handmade textile.
The Smithsonian's handling guide tells readers not to attempt improvised conservation on antique or fragile textiles and to document concerns, take photographs, and contact a textile conservator. Keep that route for discolouration, active fibre loss, loose decoration, old adhesive, unknown coatings, or uncertain stains.
Mould and insects require a controlled response. Do not brush, shake, smell closely, spray, or apply a household pesticide to the object. Limit handling and contact an appropriate conservator; address building moisture or pests with qualified help.
Review stored textiles without overhandling
Inspect periodically for leaks, damp, dust, pest evidence, crushed boxes, or new damage. Prepare the clear support surface before unfolding the piece.
Keep the written record and photographs separate from the object, and update them only with observed changes.
